Treatment Options

To help make an informed decision about treatment for prostate cancer, the patient should first ask the doctor for a summary of the various treatments available, including:

  • Description of the treatment
  • Best candidates for each type of treatment
  • Effectiveness and side effects
  • Cost and whether insurance will cover the procedures
  • Advantages
  • Disadvantages

The two treatments most commonly used are radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy.  However, there are also other treatments available that are less traditional.  The following is a summary of the various treatments presently available.

  • Watchful waiting:  This approach is also known as "observation," "surveillance," "expectant therapy," "expectant management" or "deferred treatment."  This option involves monitoring your prostate cancer at least every six months to see how the cancer is progressing.  Those who may prefer this avenue might be:

  • Men with a life expectancy that is no more than ten years due to age (over 75), other illnesses, or genetic history.

  • Men over 70 with a very small , slow growing cancer (2-4 on the Gleason rating)
  • Men with cancer that is confined to the prostate who want to take some time to consider the options available for treatment
  • Men with advanced prostate cancer who are not yet experiencing symptoms.
