Breast
Reduction
Large
breasts can be a big problem. Both physically and psychologically.
Oversize breasts interfere with normal function and physical activity
by causing back pain, postural problems, deformities of the back
and shoulders, skin rashes under the breast and breast pain. However,
plastic surgeons also view breast reduction surgery as an operation
with an important aesthetic component; in addition to alleviating
physical problems, it can improve the shape of the breasts and nipple
areas. Breast reduction also can enhance the overall appearance
by making the breasts more proportional to the rest of the body.
This
procedure can reduce the size and reshape large breasts by removing
excess skin and underlying tissue. An oversized areola can be made
smaller at the same time. If you have large, sagging breasts, you
may be a good candidate. If your breasts are sagging but not overly
large, a breast lift may be all you need.
The
operation requires a general anesthetic and may be performed on
an outpatient basis. Although your surgeon will make every effort
to minimize incisions, the scars from breast reduction surgery are
visible in the lower portion of the breast and a around the areola.
The
surgeon makes incisions horizontally and vertically following the
natural contour of the breast. Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed
and then the nipple, areola and underlying tissue are moved to a
new, higher location. When the breasts are extremely oversized,
it's sometimes necessary to completely detach the nipple before
it is relocated.
The
procedure takes about three to four hours and after surgery, for
a few days, you'll probably experience pain and discomfort which
can be controlled with medications. You will be up and around in
a day or two and the swelling and bruising usually subsides in five
to seven days. You will have to wear a supportive bra for several
weeks to promote healing. Loss of sensation of the nipples and breast
skin is possible but may improve gradually. Strenuous exercise and
overhead lifting should be avoided for several weeks after surgery.
