Breast
Lift (Mastopexy)
As
the years go by, most women notice a gradual deterioration in the
size, shape and feel of their breasts. Gravity, pregnancy, breast
feeding, weight gain and loss all take their toll. The breast lift
operation raises and recontours lose, sagging breasts.
In
a breast lift, the surgeon relocates the nipple and areola (the
pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) to a higher position, repositions
the breast tissue to a higher level, removes the excess skin from
the lower portion of the breast and then reshapes the remaining
breast skin. If you have your breasts enlarged as well as lifted,
an implant may be placed behind your breast tissue or the muscle.
Surgery
is done under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. It
usually takes three to four hours. Typically the incisions are around
the areola, extending vertically down the breast and may possibly
extend horizontally along the crease underneath the breast.
You
may feel a temporary loss of sensation in your nipples and breasts.
This will improve with time. You may be up and a around a day or
two after surgery but don't plan on returning to work for at least
a week to ten days, when your sutures will be removed. Although every
effort is made to make scars as inconspicuous as possible, they
are permanent. For almost a year, they may remain noticeable, then
they start to fade with time and are easily concealed by a normal
brassiere.
