The Food Guide Pyramid |
|||||||
|
The suggested number of servings for the five major food groups - the Bread, Cereal, RICE & Pasta Group; the Vegetable Group; the Fruit Group; the Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group; and the Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs & Nuts Group - are listed in this drawing of the Food Guide Pyramid. The pyramid also includes a recommendation to use foods in the Fats, Oils and Sweets Group sparingly. The Food Guide Pyramid emphasizes several important points that are consistent with an eating plan low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. Health experts agree that it is important to eat a wide variety of foods to help ensure you're getting the nutrients and calories you need. The three food groups filling the largest space in the Food Guide Pyramid and with the most suggested servings are plant foods that naturally contain little or no fat or cholesterol - the Bread, Cereal, RICE & Pasta Group; the Vegetable Group; and the Fruit Group. You will notice that the pyramid includes fewer servings of the two food groups containing animal foods - the Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group and the Meat, Poultry, Fish & Eggs Group. Although animal foods have traditionally been a major source of fat and saturated fat in the American diet, many lower-fat and fat-free products from these groups are now available. USDA allowed the smallest space on the Food Guide Pyramid for the Fats, Oils & Sweets Group; the suggestion to use these foods sparingly is consistent with heart-healthy eating.
